Our History

The Botswana Pensions Society is a non-profit making organization registered in 1994 with an objective to promote retirement planning to members of retirement funds and by extension to the general public. It is managed by a Management Committee comprising technically skilled representatives of industry stakeholders engaged in the management of retirement funds. The day to day administration of the Society is outsourced to a Secretariat.

Our membership comprises retirement funds, administrators, asset managers, consultants, insurance companies and audit firms, as well as specialists who offer industry-based expertise. In 2008 the Management Committee decided that the Industry Conference should be held annually, as it provided adequate exposure to the growth of industry knowledge. The Committee also resolved to increase the activities of the Society to further its objectives of providing retirement planning knowledge to their broad and varying membership. To this end, the Member Awareness and Trustee Seminars were added to the Society’s annual calendar of events.

Our Mission

“We promote the good governance of and advocate for the collective interests of the retirement fund industry thereby ensuring its sustainability.”

Our mission statement reflects our reason for existence – our core purpose. It describes what we do, who we do it for and for what benefit. The mission statement is in line with the objectives of the Society as stated in our Constitution.
The promotion of good governance speaks to the Society’s overall goal or purpose which is to ensure that the retirement industry is, notwithstanding the existence of the Regulator, a well governed, self-governed industry. The Society will do this by advocating leading practices as well as providing support to these retirement funds that do not have all the resources to execute effectively.

Being an advocate for the collective interests encapsulates the need for the Society to always be seen to be acting in the best interests of retirement industry, and not in the interests of any individual member or constituency.
Lastly, the mission speaks to sustainability of the retirement fund industry in the country. This is the overarching outcome the Society seeks to achieve – to ensure that member interests are protected enabling Batswana to enjoy sustainable livelihoods following retirement

Our Vision

“To be recognized as a united, expert representative of the retirement industry.”

Our vision represents how we wish to be described and characterized by ourselves and our stakeholders in the future. It represents our aspirations and provides clear guidelines in deciding the plans that need to be put in place in order to realise the said aspirations.

The BPS aspires to be recognised as a ‘united, expert representative’ of the retirement industry. This speaks to the Society’s desire to be seen by all its stakeholders as being a singular reference point of the retirement industry.

The Society and all its stakeholders must be united in all its work and advocacy representing the collective good of the entire industry. The BPS also aspires to be a competent, expert representative of the industry which will ensure that stakeholders receive the requisite expertise in the execution of the Society mission.

Our Values

Our core values articulate the behaviours that will not be sacrificed in the fulfillment of our mission and in pursuit of our vision and strategic goals.

The Management Committee commits to our key value of integrity. This value is important because the Society, and especially the Management Committee, must always act in a transparent manner, and in the collective (best) interests of the industry acting with fairness and without favouring individual member interests.

The next value the Management Committee commits to is that of professionalism. This value speaks to the fact that the Society wants to be independent and committed to ‘doing the right thing’, and as such will always be open minded in adopting ideas, suggestions and approaches in driving the ambitions of the retirement industry.

Being knowledgeable is the other value to which the Society subscribes. This value to speaks to the Society’s promise to always provide the most expert and leading advice possible in its interactions with stakeholders
